Can Roofing Shingles Be Painted?

Can Roofing Shingles Be Painted? This is a question we get a lot here at Done Rite Roofing. The answer is, “yes!” They actually make special paints for that very purpose.

There are many reasons why people want to do this. Some just want to brighten up their homes…it really is all about aesthetic appeal. Some people are just concerned about extending the lifespan of their roof, and have heard roofing shingle paints can get the job done.

However, there are some caveats.

First, you do not want to use roofing shingle paint as a substitute for real roofing work if there is something wrong with your roof. Before you paint we would suggest getting a full roofing inspection completed so weak spots and trouble spots can be addressed and repaired. Then your paint will be more effective overall, and we won’t have to rip up pieces of your pretty new paint job to fix a problem later.

Second, don’t rely on paint to extend the lifespan of your roof. Once your roof is 17 years old or so you want to make that roof inspection an annual activity. You might get lucky and hear, “Your roof’s in great shape” for the next ten years, but you don’t want to be surprised. Some people will get lucky. Others will not.

And if your only reason for painting is some vague hope that you’ll make your roof last longer we’d say, “Don’t waste your money.” It really is a matter of luck. You could lose your roof to a storm, too. Then you’d feel pretty silly about taking the time and spending the money!

If you’re doing it because you want a cheerful blue roof or red roof or whatever color you’re contemplating, then have at. Choose the right kind of paint (Behr makes a multi-surface roofing paint which is pretty reputable and reliable) and have a good time. Take safety measures or get someone experienced up there so you don’t hurt yourself while this project is going on.

You have another option too–talk to roofers about installing a roof that’s already a pleasing color. For example, roofing tiles come in a variety of colors. You could have a very pretty roof while simultaneously installing one which does a better job of withstanding our tough Clearwater weather. Give us a call if you’d like to explore your options–we think you’ll be very pleased with what we have to share with you!
