This is a question we get from quite a few homeowners, especially since there has been a lot of buzz about white roofs and white roof coatings. Fortunately, you will not see a higher electric bill just because your roof is a darker color–not even here in Tampa, FL.
The issue is roofing ventilation, not roofing color. Inadequate, improper, or blocked attic ventilation traps heat in your attic, making it harder for you to cool the entire house.
Inadequate roofing ventilation can have other consequences as well. Roof ventilation also helps you remove excess moisture from your home. This means it’s one of your primary defenses against mold and mildew.
Moisture can wreak havoc on roofing nails, fasteners, and flashing, too–because moisture, of course, creates rust.
At its most extreme, however, improper roof ventilation can destroy your roof decking. A soggy, sagging, warping roof deck isn’t ever going to be able to do a good job of supporting your roof. In addition, that moisture keeps traveling right to the underlayment, destroying that, as well.
So if you’ve got a really high energy bill, you should actually take it as an early warning signal that says you need to get your ventilation system checked out. You may be required to pay for some very expensive repairs soon if you do not. The color of your roof? That’s the last thing you need to be worried about.
Rest assured that we take measures to ensure proper ventilation whenever we install a new roof. In addition, roofing tiles can be installed in a variety of colors, which means you can still enjoy a light, bright roof if you want to!
