Don’t get caught up in labels.
The roofing industry is full of people who will tell you they specialize in “green roofs,” “eco roofs,” or “cool roofs.” Some of these roofs are gimmicky and particularly impractical for life in Tampa or Clearwater, such as the trendy “living roofs” you might have seen on Pinterest.
Here in Florida, if you want a garden we absolutely suggest you build yours on the ground.
Others are just marketing, inspiring you to pay more because the roof is white, or because it’s called an “eco roof.”
In truth, most modern roofs are already incredibly eco-friendly.
Take asphalt…it’s made from recycled materials. Tile can be broken down and made into new roofing tiles when they finally crack or wear out, which won’t happen for 30 to 50 years. Metal roofing sits up there for 100 years, and metal can always be melted down and made into something else.
Roofs don’t create emissions, and if they’re paired with proper insulation are already designed to reduce the amount of energy it takes to heat or cool your home, with no gimmicks required.
That’s not to say innovations won’t happen. We’ve heard of roofs made of nothing but space-age solar panel materials; someday those may be mass produced by reputable roofing companies and added to our own repertoire…but only after they’ve been rigorously tested and tried, so we know there are no downsides to recommending them.
In the meantime, we’re going to stick to the roofing that serves our customers. We’ll offer it at a fair price, and we won’t rely on gimmicks.
